Kelly Edwards solves my top 5 design dilemmas (plus a blogiversary giveaway)

Yesterday, I proudly celebrated Living Rich on Less’s third anniversary. Over these past three years of blogging, I’ve been blessed beyond measure; pushed beyond my DIY limits; and grown beyond my expectations.

My favorite part of this journey so far has been connecting with all of you, my amazing, encouraging and inspiring readers, who I may not otherwise have had the privilege of meeting.

Also, getting the chance to rub elbows with professional DIYers and designers in the home and garden niche has been a blessing this thrifty, paint-stained clothes wearin’, country girl never expected.

For example, I recently got to pick the brain of fellow DIYer and design expert Kelly Edwards. Kelly is the co-host and design coordinator for HGTV’s “Design on a Dime” as well as STYLE Network’s “Tacky House.” She is also the author of “The Design Cookbook: Recipes for a Stylish Home.”

Kelly-Edwards-Design-Cookbook

I asked Kelly for help with my current top five design dilemmas:

  1. What are some quick and inexpensive changes I can make to my smoky blue master bedroom to take the decor from winter to summer?
  2. I am in the throes of a master bathroom makeover, but I haven’t made any decisions yet regarding the shower/tub. What trends are you seeing (and loving) with regard to bath and shower design?
  3. I have a wraparound covered porch that I am having difficulty furnishing on a tight budget. Any suggestions?
  4. Our garage is a total mess. It really needs a complete makeover. Do you have any recommendations on how we can tackle this project quickly and inexpensively this summer, yet still have time leftover to spend at the lake?
  5. My laundry room is the size of a small, walk-in closet. Any tips on how I can maximize my storage in this tiny room?

With her seemingly effortless style and panache, Kelly not only fielded each of my questions personally, but also provided me with a video of the answers for you to enjoy! Check out the full, 6-minute video below:

In addition, I received a package of home goodies to help me incorporate some of Kelly’s suggestions.

But the best part of all is that Kelly also wants to give one of you lucky readers the same package I received, which includes a signed copy of Kelly’s book, a Waterpik® SprayShaper™ shower head and a $25 Home Depot gift card!

Happy Blogiversary! I would love to have Kelly Edwards book! My design dilemma is how to furnish and decorate my master bedroom in our new home. The floors are beautiful sienna, white and grey granite, the walls greige with white trim. That’s as far as I’ve got! Thank you for such a wonderful giveaway! I have subscribed to your great blog.

My cabinets are so deep that you have to take everything out up front to get to whats in the back. I have thought about doing roll-out shelfs but don’t know if I can do it my self. Do you have any suggestions?

    • Susan says:

Carolyn, I have pull-out shelves that are mounted within my lower cabinets in my kitchen. They work GREAT for plastic containers, pots and pans, lids, etc. And they are truly pretty easy to install, too. I know you can do it! I believe you can pick them up at your favorite home improvement store (Lowe’s, Home Depot) and they come with full instructions. 🙂

  4. Lisa says:

Our biggest problem is finding stylish storage solutions and organizational help.

  5. Kim R says:

I have a new vacation home in the mountains and love most everything about it except the kitchen cabinets. I can’t afford to replace them all, but would like to replace the uppers. Or maybe redesign the upper cabinets. Or rip the upper cabinets out and have open shelves. I definitely want to wall in around the refrigerator. These are custom cabinets that are not easily duplicated. I just don’t know what to do!
    Congratulations on your blog anniversary!

We are struggling to update 1970’s bathroom on a tight budget. Sure could use some help. I agree with the video that just a shower would be a good solution for one of our baths and then a tub/shower in the other…now how to talk hubby into it…. Thanks for the chance at the giveaway.

We recently replaced our old shower doors and now realize that the new one has a stationary door. Thinking of replacing the shower head with a hand held, to facilitate cleaning that stationary door. The Water Pik head would do that and upgrade our shower head at the same time.

  45. Patty says:

Congrats on your anniversary. My big problem is the master BR and bath, The window placement is all wrong so only part of the bed is under the window. the master bath is so ugly, yellow 70’s tile, walls and floor, and way to small we have talked about taking the tub out and just have a nice walk in shower, we would still have a tub in the guest BR. I really need help.

  46. Sharon says:

Love the video and the giveaway… Great package!

  47. marianne says:

I don’t know who design the master bedroom in my house but it is just plain weird. Small entrance way with 3 doors jammed together. Linen closet that is so small it is not worth having and a shower that is way to small. The design is way off and don’t know the best way to redesign on a low scale budget.

  48. JoAnn says:

Thanks for the chance to win! I need help how to completely change the look of our great room on a very small budget, over time. If I start adding small things they wont work with everything else!

I live in a leased townhouse, and have a small dark entry foyer with no window, and hardly any wall space. I need ideas to brighten it, and give it a warm welcoming feel.

  51. Terri says:

I live in a rental home and have a great landlord who has done many improvements ( new roof, new shower and tub, repainted exterior to mention a few). However, at this point there’s no way I’m getting new carpet. I keep it vacuumed and steam clean it regularly with vinegar and have area rugs in seating areas, etc. but the traffic areas still don’t look very good with the padding worn down and the carpet dull. Any suggestions to perk things up?

We are in the process of finishing off the “main” bathroom and are trying to decide whether we should have cupboard space in it or just a sink with no counter or cupboard. It will mainly be used for guests (not overnight) to use and for bathing our granddaughter. What is your recommendation? Thanks, Barb in VT

We moved into a house with LOTS of travertine tile floors that were not installed very well. I am having problems finding information on how to correct the problems of lipping and fixing some of the larger imperfections (I know it is natural stone and therefore not perfect). A new shower head would make bathing our two dogs and keeping those shower doors clean. I follow Living Rich on Less. Thanks.

The garage! We have worked on it, had a yard sale and still need to organize the ‘stuff’ we need/want to keep. Thanks.

  58. Laurie Bordelon says:

My problem is clutter. Every member of our family walks in and drops mail, keys, phones, newspapers, etc. on the kitchen counter. I have no real space to put any of those neat organization stations. Kitchen always looks a mess!

  72. Rachel M. Dow says:

Our biggest problem is our family room. 2 out of the 4 walls are floor to ceiling wall to wall windows the 3rd has a large brick fireplace flanked by two floor to ceiling windows (with maybe 2 feet of wall space where each corner of the room meets) and the 4th wall is only a small space (maybe 5 1/2 feet?) due to the large doorway that connects the room to the rest of the house. We have yet to find a way to control the kids toys ( it is THE play space since we also have a formal living room) or place the furniture (including the 32″ main TV and only one on the main floor) without the room looking like one big cluttered mess! HELP! :o)
