‘Sweet’ holiday tablescape, easy crafts and a recipe

During the holiday season, I love decorating the dinner table. I particularly enjoy creating unique, themed tablescapes to try and “wow” my family and friends and make them feel extra special.

This year, I broke out of the traditional red and green box and put together something a little more unexpected – I’m calling it my “sweet treats” holiday tablescape. I used rich purples and metallic elements as the base color palette. I also incorporated a few small gifts that guests can take home with them, hopefully making the dinner and fellowship even more memorable.

I started with a metallic green table runner and my favorite white dishes. I am a huge fan of white dishes because they are so versatile. I chose the color palette and theme based on the main dinner party favor – this yummy-smelling Limited Edition Winter Collection candle from Glade® called Sweet Holiday Treat™ (available for a short time only at Target).

I had a blast adding embellishments to the table like flowers, ribbon, tea lights and silver ornaments.

I worked on a few super easy craft projects to give each place setting a personalized, custom touch.

Chalkboard-nametag

For example, to create this chalkboard name tag, I cut out a name tag shape from a cereal box.

Then I used a hole punch to make a hole for the ribbon.

After that, I spray-painted the shape with chalkboard paint. When it dried, I swiped a bit of chalk dust over the tag to give it an authentic, chalkboard look. Finally, I used a purple chalkboard pen to write out the name and tied the tag to its gift box with purple ribbon.

To create the candy-filled gift box, I used Mod Podge to cover an inexpensive party favor box with silver wrapping paper. I added a layer of Mod Podge on the outside of the paper as well to prevent loose glitter from falling on the table and food.

I filled the silver box with a layer of purple tissue paper, then added my own “sweet treats” – homemade cream cheese mint candies colored purple using red and blue food coloring. You can get the recipe here.

I had a lot of fun crafting this inexpensive, yet elegant tablescape for the holidays.

Now for the hard part … the menu …
