Nursery closet makeover
Today I’m tickled to show you what I’ve been up to in our son’s nursery closet. It started out looking something like this:
I forgot to get “before” pictures of the nursery closet, so you’ll just have to take my word for the fact that it was a total hot mess (much like this closet in our office).
The only storage it offered was one wire shelf running the entire length of the closet. I’m not a huge fan of wire shelving and I also don’t think one long rod and shelf are necessarily the best use of vertical space – especially when the clothes you’re hanging are for an infant.
So I really wanted to give this closet some customized storage, but when I looked at the prices of custom closets, I realized they are expensive with a capital “E.” And since we are trying to live rich on less up in here, I had to brainstorm ideas for a more affordable alternative. This is what I came up with:
I found the storage unit in the middle online at Walmart.com for $89 plus free shipping. The hubs and I cut the closet’s existing wire shelf and used half of it for the left side of the closet and the other half for the top shelf on the right side. For the bottom shelf on the right side, we used another leftover wire shelf we had in our house.
The total cost of this closet makeover was $89 plus tax. Not too bad, in my opinion, and I am absolutely thrilled with the results.
I also love these cute white bins from Walmart that I use for our little man’s extra products and toys:
I created the label using scrapbook paper and leftover ribbon.
Here’s the closet with all our tiny guy’s stuff in it:
What do you think of our thrifty nursery closet makeover?
I’m linking this up to The Shabby Nest, Chic on a Shoestring Decorating, Home Stories A to Z, My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia, New Nostalgia, Love of Family & Home and Seven Thirty Three.
Great makeover! And the shelving is spaced well enough that you won’t need to rearrange as his clothing grows. 🙂
Thanks, Sarah!
I love this! Do you mind sharing the brand/link for the storage unit from Walmart? I’m currently trying to organize our nursery closet as well 🙂
Sure! It’s http://www.walmart.com/ip/SystemBuild-Closet-Organizer-Starter-Kit-with-Drawers-White-7148401PCOM/17470890#ProductDetail. Good luck with your nursery closet!
Awesome! And you have the perfect space on the left for a hamper! Congratulations on your little one!
There’s nothing like a nice, clean, organized closet. You pictures make me want to go tackle a few of my closets right now. Thanks for sharing and inspiring! Have a great day!
looks so great 🙂 want to come redo MINE? stopping by from the shabby nest
I love that you showed what a real closet looks like in the Before picture, even if it’s not the nursery closet. All too often we get the cleaned out, bare closet with just the clothing rod. Now that looks like a massive closet that needs a redo. You did such a fantastic job with your son’s nursery and so thrifty too, did you ever consider taking that know how to that closet in the before picture? It’s probably not as fun to work on an office closet though. I totally would get that, when you have a baby to keep you busy.
Thanks for the feedback, Judy. Most of the time, my entire house looks like a “before” picture, so I’m never short on projects. I definitely have plans to re-do the office closet. As you can see, it needs it! 🙂 I promised my husband we would finish the nursery and his closet before we moved on the office closet. But stay tuned … I’ve got big plans for it. Thanks for stopping by!
Was the piece in the middle all one piece or did you have to buy the drawers separately? When you go to the link it doesn’t give you the option to purchase?
Kristi, Yes. It is all one piece. The shelves and the drawers below them all came together for $89. Unfortunately, it looks like Walmart.com no longer sells them as one unit. That’s why I’m not able to leave a link in the post to purchase it. In fact, I was hoping to purchase a few more of these myself when I do my own closet makeover, so I am bummed I am no longer able to find the whole unit together. It was a super good deal!
