Cheap organizing solutions

I’ve always been a tad bit obsessed with organizing. I mean, I have written a book on the subject. And I’m pretty sure I could live in The Container Store.

Today, I thought I’d share with you a few ways I’m organizing the stuff in our home using cheap – and in some cases, free – items. Click on the project title to be taken to the tutorial.

1. Dollar Tree under-the-sink organizers

I use these bins, which cost $1 apiece, to corral all the bathroom supplies we use every day, from hair products to feminine and bath products. The chalkboard labels came from Target, I believe. They carry them at Walmart now as well.

2. Cardboard hair tie holder

I did this project a few years ago. I’m impressed with how well it’s holding up. It works great and is used every day. It’s such a small thing, but it does the job.

3. Organized hot beverage station

For this project, I used a wire office drawer organizer that was collecting dust in our basement. You could also cut small cardboard boxes to fit your drawer, jazzing them up with wrapping or scrapbook paper.

4. Cardboard magazine holder

Cereal boxes work great for this. I glued scrapbook paper over my magazine holders to create a finished look that matches my office decor. I’m considering creating a few cereal box organizers and spray-painting them with a metallic color. I’ll let you know how that turns out.

5. $7 yard sale closet organizer

I scored big when I found this organizing system at a yard sale for $7. It was brand new, still in the package.

6. DIY tool organizer

This helps me keep the tools I use most frequently in full view and easily accessible.
