Confessions

OK. So I apologize that it’s taken me three days this week to get my thoughts together for a post. I think I have a bad case of the winter blues … cabin fever … seasonal affective disorder … whatever you want to call it.

Remember last week when I told you about my wonderful plans for molding in our dining room? Remember I said I was hoping to start that project over the weekend? Well, uh, I didn’t (unless you consider standing in the room, arms folded, staring blankly at the walls for 10 minutes starting the project).

In fact, I didn’t really feel like doing anything around the house this weekend, especially a home improvement project. So what does any respectable girl with a mild case of the “lazies” do? She goes shopping, of course.

I headed out with Tiny (I had to bribe her with a Mickey D’s happy meal) to explore the brand new Hobby Lobby that just opened up near us.

By the way, my reaction upon entering a Hobby Lobby is exactly the same reaction that our daughter has upon entering a Chuck E. Cheese’s. You know … shrieking … running around in all directions … climbing on things … pushing random buttons …

Hob Lob was a good time, to say the least. I got a few plate hangers so that I can attach some white plates to the dining room wall. (Does that count as starting the project?)

I absolved my guilt over not doing anything about the dining room by promising to at least purchase fabric for the dining room curtains while we were out. We’ve lived in our home for more than a year and we still don’t have any curtains in the dining room.

I found the ca-uuutest script fabric on sale at Jo Ann Fabric that would work perfectly for the space. Of course, they only had two yards left (I need 10). And, of course, there’s none in the warehouse, none online, none left on the planet. So I’m back to square one with that.

Sad to say, after our fairly pointless, yet utterly gratifying shopping excursion, my urge to loaf did not subside. For the rest of the weekend, our family more or less watched movies and snacked until we were sick.

So the only productive piece of information I can offer you today is a review of one of the movies I watched:

I really enjoyed this movie. It’s a tear-jerking, truly inspirational family film (I know, rare, right?). The following is a brief synopsis from the movie’s website:

As law enforcement officers, Adam Mitchell, Nathan Hayes, David Thomson and Shane Fuller are confident and focused. Yet at the end of the day, they face a challenge that none of them are truly prepared to tackle: fatherhood. While they consistently give their best on the job, good enough seems to be all they can muster as dads. But they’re quickly discovering that their standard is missing the mark.

When tragedy hits home, these men are left wrestling with their hopes, their fears, their faith and their fathering. Can a newfound urgency help these dads draw closer to God … and to their children?

Filled with action-packed police drama, Courageous is the fourth film from Sherwood Pictures, the moviemaking ministry of Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia. Viewers will once again find themselves laughing, crying and cheering as they are challenged and inspired by everyday heroes who long to be the kinds of dads that make a lifelong impact on their children.

Sounds cool, no? I give this movie the highest score on my brush of approval scale.

If you haven’t seen Courageous yet, rent or buy it this weekend. You won’t regret it.

    Susan,

As always, great to see a post, this time of year, admitting (as we all are feeling) that it is hard to get motivated. I do not normally do this, but one thing you said bothered me – when you attributed your malaise to “seasonal affective disorder” and then added “snicker.” I know you were just having fun with it, but for many people, it is a reality. I live in the pacific Northwest and, believe me, it is bad enough for some people to stop them in their tracks for months (and I am in the mental health field, so it’s a real diagnosis, beleive me).
I really enjoy your blog; I just had to comment on this, because at times we can casually comment on something without realizing it is hurtful.

Jane, Thanks so much for your feedback. I would never want to make light of, or minimize, the pain or illnesses of others. Consider it ignorance on my part. I’m removing that portion of the post so as not to offend anyone else. Again, I appreciate your input.

    Hey Susan,
Thanks for being real, sometimes I feel like I am out here all alone and this last week has been rough with the blah’s. Hobby Lobby is awesome ! I would have to say that is my new favorite store. I just have to ‘window shop’ and dream, but it’s good to dream right? Someday I will be able to make those dreams real. I love that you share such great ideas. I hope your feeling ‘uplifted’. Thanks again.

Hey, wish I would’ve read this movie review over the weekend.. There was nothing good on tv and I wasn’t sure I would like this movie or not so I didn’t want to waste the PPV fee to find out. I will definately watch it.. Thanks!

    LOVE YOUR SITE!

Oh, Susan…I can completely relate. The gray, cold, wet weather is taking its toll on me too. At least I’m in good company! One cheery thing going on in my house right now is that every day for about a week is that we hear an owl hooting away. It’s so intriguing…
You know, as I’m writing, I’m reminded that this natural world reflects spiritual truths. I wonder what Truth we could discover in the midst of the Winter blues? Let me know if you have an epiphany.
