Kitchen and bath organizing tips

I seem to be on a bit of an organizing kick right now. In fact, I’ve discovered I am becoming pretty predictable in my (nearly) middle age and am noticing some distinct behavioral patterns:

  1. Work on home improvement project.
  2. Take for-eva to finish home improvement project.
  3. Neglect housework due to home improvement project.
  4. Freak out at mess.
  5. Begin frantically cleaning and organizing.
  6. Get bored with mundane household chores.
  7. Decide to start new home improvement project.
  8. Repeat.

Does anyone else follow a cray cray 8-step program like me? Anyway, I recently finished our son’s nursery and nursery closet, so I’m currently on Step 5.

The other day, I opened the kitchen drawer that keeps many of my baking/cooking utensils. Of course it was a mess:

So I decided it.must.be.organized.RIGHT.NOW. Never mind the fact that it was 10 p.m. on a weeknight and the rest of the house looked like a refugee camp. I waded through the mess in our basement (another sad casualty of recent improvement projects) and dug out a drawer organizer that was once used in our old office desk. I cleaned out the kitchen drawer, threw away no-longer-useful items, popped in the organizer and found a spot for everything. This is what it looks like now:

It’s little things like this that make me believe there’s still hope.

I was on such a high from my drawer experience that I decided to create a little organized toiletry station for under the sink in my downstairs half bathroom.

I included items for guests to use like mouthwash (and disposable cups), dental floss picks, moisturizer, air freshener, and hair and feminine products.

One more thing I must confess: I am one of those ridiculous people who likes to keep pretty hand towels in the bathroom that are meant for decorative purposes only.

So for everyday use by our family, I installed a little clip and hung a “regular” towel on the back of the cabinet door:

This allows me to reserve the “pretty” towels for guests. Don’t judge. 🙂

Do you have any crazy ideas for kitchen and bath organization? Are you like me and you fluctuate between bouts of mass chaos and meticulous organization?

I love that you have decorative towels in your bathroom! I think they add such a nice touch.

Love the pics! I am in also in the organizing mode. I just reorganized my kitchen drawer again as well. I like the help yourself basket. You can also put this in the nearby linen closet if you share a bathroom with company. =)

I, too, follow a cray, cray 8- step program and have ‘pretty’ decorative towels for guest use only. Nice to know I’m not alone. The ‘help yourself’ container is a very nice touch that I plan to incorporate.
