#001: Why today’s homes are filthy and how to clean up our act [Podcast premiere]

Over the past two weeks, I’ve been a bit of a jet setter, working away with the Air National Guard, vacationing with the family, and attending the coolest conference everΒ (more deets on that later).

Although I have certainly enjoyed the break from my normal routine, I am itching to get back to the DIY shenanigans. Before I dive into home improvement projects, however, I wanted to share with you the very first episode of my new “Living Rich” podcast.

Podcast-art-new

The “Living Rich” podcast centers around the topics of decorating, organizing, and home and life improvement. In my first 20-minute episode, I discuss why I believe today’s homes are so filthy and then I offer some strategies to help get them clean for good.

If you have a few moments while running errands, cooking, cleaning, exercising, etc., please click on the link below to listen to Episode 1.

I personally love podcasts because they are like books and radio shows that you can listen to for free at your convenience. I listen to podcasts regularly while I run and while I’m driving. At this point in my life, I unfortunately don’t have as much time to sit down and read great books. Podcasts are a way for me to get my education and entertainment fixes while on the go.

After listening to Episode 1 of the “Living Rich” podcast, I would love if you would leave me a comment here with your feedback. And please also let me know if there are any topics you would like to see covered in a future episode.

I’m linking this up to Home Stories A to Z.

    Good morning!
Just finished listening to your podcast. First, I think you did a great job with it. Second, I learned two things from your podcast that I didn’t know before. We just recently moved , so you can imagine the state our house is in now. As we get settled I am hoping to implement the mount Vernon method as well as your method of deep cleaniing. Thanks for sharing.

I’m so glad the podcast was helpful to you, Cheryl. I’ve moved many times so I totally understand where you are right now. Baby steps, right?

You need to come to my house and help!!! I have to do the decluttering stage in every darn room! It was a great Podcast. Sounds like you had fun at your conference!

I loved the podcast and the great suggestions for keeping a clean house. One thing that really helps my cleaning mindset is to pretend that I always have my house on the market and that a prospective buyer could come by at any moment. That way, every time I leave a room, I make sure it is straight. That doesn’t take care of the deep cleaning that you covered here, but it surely saves a lot of angst if someone suddenly shows up unexpected!

Thank you so much for this. I loved it and will definitely be implementing so much of what I heard. I am blessed to have someone clean for me every other week so my house is never filthy but not a lot of deep cleaning gets done either! I find that I let things go because it’s “clean enough”. I loved your thoughts about making do with less and reducing clutter, too.

I found your blog a few months ago and love it. I love your “voice” and you have so much helpful information to pass on. I’m looking forward to the next podcast. Thanks again!

Wow, Sue. Thanks so much for your kind words. I’m glad you could get past all the “ums” and uhs” in the podcast. And lucky you for having a cleaning person! I certainly could use one.

I just listened to the podcast and enjoyed it very much. I am actually living in a hotel at the moment waiting for our house to be finished hopefully end of August. We have downsized big time, so I am more interested in just keeping organized and clean as we move in to our new house. I think this will help as we start our new adventure and will try to remember alot of what you said before I allow things to come into the house and make clutter start all over again!

Just watched your Podcast. You did a great job. I look at your web site often and think your house looks PERFECT. Now I know how you do it. Hopefully, sometime I can use your methods.

Hi, my name is Ruth and I live in a filthy house….I am not a filthy person, I just can’t seem to keep up with all that needs doing. You hit it right when you said , bigger house + more stuff= more mess! This pod cast was encouraging and instead of being overwhelmed, I’m going to take those baby steps until I get it under control. I need the peace and comfort to enjoy our home.

    • Susan says:

Awesome, Ruth. I have to take baby steps every day or I get majorly overwhelmed and anxious about all that needs done. I’m glad the podcast was helpful to you.

Thank you so much for this podcast. Loved the Mt. Vernon method. So funny, i woke up this morning and looked at my horrendous kitchen after a long night. I so didn’t want to start with the kitchen, but i knew it had to be done. So that was the first thing I started tackling while listening to your podcast at the same time. As i’m in the middle of deep into cleaning, i hear, “you might want to leave your kitchen for last” hehehe. ooops. haha. But thank you. I loved this. My kitchen is clean now =)

    • Susan says:

Wow, Arlene. Thanks so much for the kind feedback. I’m glad the method is working for you. I’m looking around my house right now after the holidays exploded in here. You may have inspired me to do some Mt. Vernonizing myself today. πŸ™‚
