Kitchen herb garden (Take 2)

Happy Tuesday!

For those of you who committed to last week’s clean-sink challenge, how are you doing so far? I have managed to keep my sink clean every night since Friday, which, I hate to admit, might be a record for our family. It has been so worth it! Waking up to a clean sink in the morning has been motivating and energizing. It makes me feel like I have one teeny, tiny thing in my life under control. Can I get an ‘Amen?’

Now on to today’s post. Some of you may recall the caauute little kitchen herb garden I created using leftover wooden tea boxes.

Well … uhum … the plants all died over the winter. And so, because I’m nothing if not persistent, I’ve decided to give the whole kitchen herb garden a try once more.

Over the weekend, I purchased these beauties.

I planted them in two containers I found in our garden shed.

The store didn’t have a cilantro plant, so I purchased a seed packet and planted the seeds instead. I need some cilantro in my life!

To make the plant labels, I cut in thirds some wooden paint stirrers. Then I painted them using this black chalkboard spray paint.

Finally, I used my white chalkboard marker to label each stick.

If I don’t touch or breathe on them too much, hopefully these plants will survive. I love using fresh herbs in my summer dishes, don’t you?

By the way, does anyone have any tips on how I can keep these lovelies growing strong? Please share.

  1. Use Epsom Salt – For potted plants, simply dissolve 2 tablespoons per gallon of water, and substitute this solution for normal watering at least once a month – although it is safe to do this as often as desired.
Oh, and prune your herbs often to encourage growth. (I always forget to do that!)
    Have a GREAT day!

Well, I am proud to say that I have kept my sink clean every night since your challenge and like you, that’s a record for our household. And now you’ve inspired me again…I’ve been wanting to grow herbs. No time like the present!

The clean sink challenge has drastically changed our day. I am a homeschooling mom who works part-time and it has been so great to wake up to a clean kitchen. I have more time to spend with my kids and it makes the day so much more relaxed. Thank you for the challenge. Now I need to go get some herbs too.

Hi Susan! Someone once told me that the potted herbs from the supermarket are not designed to grow long term (I had quite a few die on me…not entirely sure how true that is though) So now I buy them from the garden centre instead and they do much better!
