Natural cleaning on a budget plus a HomeRight giveaway
With a curious toddler in the house who will gladly help himself to anything in our cabinets and drawers, I’ve had to get serious about ridding my home of toxic cleaning supplies and products.
Today I want to share with you a few recipes for homemade, non-toxic cleaners that really work (and smell great, too). I also have a new tool I am loving right now that cleans with water alone – no chemicals or expensive disposable cloths required! I am tickled to demonstrate that tool for you – especially because one of you luckies will get to win one, thanks to the folks at HomeRight®.
To make my favorite thrifty, non-toxic all-purpose cleaner, you’ll need the following ingredients:
1 teaspoon Borax
1/2 teaspoon washing soda
1 teaspoon natural liquid soap – I like Shaklee’s Basic H2; it’s concentrated, though, so I use less than a teaspoon.
A few drops of essential oil(s) – I’m loving eucalyptus oil right now. It has a minty pine smell and supposedly keeps fleas off of dogs, which is why I originally bought it.
2 cups warm water (preferably distilled)
Mix everything and shake well. This stuff smells delightful and I feel like my kitchen is truly clean after I spray it on countertops, tabletops, the sink, etc.
Here’s another one of my favorite natural cleaner recipes:
Lemon Oil Duster
Ingredients:
10 drops lemon oil
2 Tablespoons lemon juice
A few drops of olive oil
Mix everything together, spray on a soft cotton cloth, and use to dust furniture.
Now on to my new favorite cleaning tool. Check out the video below where I share how I’m cleaning everything around my home with the HomeRight SteamMachine Plus.
The HomeRight SteamMachine Plus Multi-Purpose Steam Mop is ideal for everyday, chemical-free cleaning. It heats up quickly and features a detachable hand-held steamer, which includes six attachments for cleaning, disinfecting and wrinkle-releasing. The 205-degree temperature steam at nozzle kills 99.9 percent of germs and bacteria. The handle folds down for easy storage. The floor mop and pad are great for disinfecting hard floors, such as laminate, hardwood, tile, stone, vinyl and linoleum.

Keeping the basement clean & free from clutter.
Can’t wait to try this cleaner!
bathroom. Thanks for the giveaway.
I’ve been looking all over for steam cleaners! It’s amazing how little people know about how great they are. It would be wonderful to have such a good quality machine in my home!
My toughest cleaning challenges is a husband who tends to make things in the kitchen, and while he’ll put away the dirty pots in the dishwasher, etc., he doesn’t see the trail of yuck on the stove, counters, floors. It’s almost a daily chore keeping up with him and the multiple cleaning techniques I use now can be exhausting after a day of work!
would be great for the bathroom! do you use it in the bathroom??
Absolutely!
My toughest cleaning challenge are my floors. I have 2 large dogs that live indoors/outdoors. As soon as I clean my floors I can turn around and there are paw prints everywhere! Wouldn’t change it for the world but sure could use help. Thanks for the chance for the giveaway. Fingers crossed.
I have a very old tile shower stall that is really hard to clean. This steamer would sure help… thanks for the chance to win one!
I have all guys in my house and I need this steamer on just about everything that needs cleaning
My bathroom is my toughest cleaning challenge. We have very hard water and even with regular cleaning, build up is a big problem.
My toughest challenge is feeling like the bathroom is ever clean enough. I’m not the best deep cleaner but this steamer seems like it would be great!
Keeping up my laminate floors has go to be my toughest challenge – they are older and not as easy to keep up with a dog, two grandkids, and a hubby that is young at heart. I could use a lot of help with 800 square feet of laminate in my house!
cleaning tile floors and showers would be a breeze with this thing! :o)
Seems very handy!
My toughest challenge are my draperies. I don’t even know where to start.
Toughest cleaning challenge? Any ‘wet’ work… I don’t mind dusting and sweeping but….

Keeping my downstairs tile clean.
My toughest cleaning challenge is keeping the kitchen clean. With a husband and a toddler it seems like there is always something to wipe up.
The tiles in the bathroom are my biggest challenge!
The floors in my house are my biggest challenge, we have a dirt driveway.
Thank you for the all purpose cleaner recipe. I’m eager to try it!
You are very welcome, Tina. Thanks for stopping by.
My glass shower door, I loathe cleaning it!

Love the steam machine! I want one!
My floors could really use that steam machine
The bathroom! I just don’t want to do it!
One of my toughest cleaning challenges is our double oven.
I do believe this would make my cleaning a lot easier!! With four kids and a husband I feel as though I will never get it all done.
My challenge is cleaning with a toddler because she likes to be my special helper but afterward (10 minutes later)…we are cleaning again.
Wow, Angela. I TOTALLY understand your dilemma. 😉
Keeping the bathrooms clean.
My challenge is cleaning the grout in the bathroom tile.
Kitchen floor.
What a great looking product.
My floors with 3 bloodhounds tracking in dirt and slobbering everywhere!
My toughest cleaning challenge is my tile floor in my kitchen combined with my toddler!
mine is cleaning the bathtub and washing the floors… I have a torn rotator cuff and any type of scrubbing or circular motion is NOT a good thing.
Bathroom floors for me!
Keeping the kitchen floors clean
Thanks for sharing your non toxic recipe with me. I can barely breathe the cleaner I have now. I have asthma so it is doubly hard to stand these vapors. I’ve been known to hold my breath. Would love to win a steam mop. Always wanted one. They are deep cleaners as well as sanitize. I, also, would love to try it on my bathroom walls just to see. Thank you for the offer 🙂
My toughest cleaning challenge is probably the grout in my bathroom tile. We have white ceramic tile with white grout. I run a day care in my home so the bathroom gets lots of use by the littles 🙂
My toughest challenge is cleaning up after 3 dog-babies!
My toughest spaces to clean are the kitchen and bathroom. I have been thinking about a steam cleaning machine for awhile now, and think it is a great solution to nearly sanitize without harsh and unwanted chemicals.
My Lab and Great Dane are gonna love this. Maybe, just maybe they will be in the dog house less often for dirt and slobbery messes!
with 4 boys my kitchen floors are always a mess
I really need this. The hardest area for me to clean is my kitchen floor.
My biggest challenge is cleaning up after boys..lol.. but my real challenge is all the windows I have in my house and living next to mountains, all the dirt that flies of of them and hits my windows is A REAL PAIN. This would definitely help a whole lot with cleaning them 🙂
getting the clean to last. my messy kids show up just as i finish cleaning
This is so awesome! I and my husband can benefit from this. Especially during this flu season!
I need this in my life pretty please!!
