Tale of two (free) chairs

I recently scored two free chairs that I am super excited to spruce up/refinish.

The one on the left I literally picked up on the side of the road. I stopped to double check with the owners that they were, in fact, wanting to get rid of it and they said, “Yep!” So I scooped it up pronto. I am thinking of refinishing the legs and arms in black. The seat upholstery is still in great condition; it just needs a good cleaning.

It is not every day that I come across a gem like this! I am still deciding whether I want to put this chair in our living room or bonus room/office. If it is going in the living room, I’ll need to refinish the legs and arms in more of an espresso or dark mahogany color, whereas if it is going in the office, black is my choice for sure.

The chair on the right my dad picked up for me. It was in one of the buildings he oversees and it was just about to be tossed in the dumpster. I’ll be refinishing this one, too. It will go in either the living room or bonus room, so I’ll be choosing black or espresso/dark mahogany for its finish as well.

Both of these chairs are made of solid wood and are well-crafted and very sturdy, which is hard to come by in furniture nowadays.

In researching the styles of these two chairs, I came to the conclusion that the one on the left has sort of a Hepplewhite feel, while the one on the right perhaps mimics the Scotch New Art style.
