Word of the Year

Last year, I joined the bandwagon and designated a Word of the Year to help guide my thoughts and actions in 2012. Little did I know how one word would change my life …

My word for 2012 was “available” and some of my goals were to reach out to others, offering them my undivided time and attention; to embrace and be grateful for each moment with the ones I love; and to look for more opportunities to serve and minister to others. God had some BIG ideas for how I would make myself available in 2012.

1. He called me to quit my full-time job as a public relations director so I would be more available to my family and this blog ministry.

2. He called me to join the Air National Guard, so I would be available to serve my country once again.

3. He called me to take the reigns as praise and worship leader at my church, so I would be more available to use the gifts he gave me to serve others.

4. He called me to step out and travel more with a local singing group, so I would be available to stretch and grow and move out of my comfort zone.

Needless to say, my Word of the Year had a HUGE impact on my life!

This year, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what my 2013 Word of the Year should be and I’ve decided on …

This year, I want to build others up, not tear them down with gossip or critical words.

I want to build my physical strength, so I can pass my military physical fitness test with flying colors (pray for me)!

I want to build more self-discipline into my life. Hello early-morning wake-up calls and fitness and nutrition changes.

I literally want to learn to build more stuff. I have a long list of home improvement projects to tackle this year. Of course, you will get a front-row ticket to the good, the bad and the ugly of it all here on LROL.

Now, let me ask … do you have a Word of the Year for 2013? If so, I would love for you to share it in the comments section. If not, I would encourage you to get one. It can change your life!

    Susan,

Question: Was this the job you and I discussed at dinner at Haven?

BUILD is a great word. I’m working on mine for the first time this year, and I think I’ve narrowed it down. I’ll check back in. xo

I love your word of the year idea. Build was a great one! Rob was jealous because he wanted to use it haha he said we could “build out marriage” and he already “builds for a living” he said ironworkers don’t go to the office they “build the office” haha but since we can’t steal your fabulous word choice, we decided to go with CONTROL. This meaning this year we plan to:
Control our finances keeping God first
Control our tempers, anger and words during tough times
Control our bodies and desires to please the Lord
and allow God to Control our schedules as well as our lives so that we can learn to let Him Control our over-Controlling notions that seem to get us into trouble at times.
I know God is going to bless your idea here, He can really be glorified through everyone’s word of the year. Love ya sis!

  4. Love this! At the risk of choosing an often-used word that might end up sounding cliche, my word is PEACE.

“And the peace of God that transcends all understanding…” That’s what I’ve been meditating upon as of late, and I’m going to carry that into the new year!

I certainly will pray for you with your military physical test — wow! When will this be?
