$88 bathroom makeover (plus a drool-worthy DIY window treatment)

I’m officially wrapping up Phase I of the master bathroom makeover on the blog today.

With this particular project, I challenged myself to tighten the belt more than ever to see just how low I could go with the total cost.

Remember, this is what I started with:

And, thankfully, this is what I have now:

You’ll notice since the last update I’ve added some gorgeous shutters to the window, courtesy of The Shutter Store.

I wish I had known about The Shutter Store when I was looking for plantation blinds for my downstairs half bathroom. This online retailer offers the biggest selection I have ever seen of custom interior window shutters and blinds. You can get top-quality (made in the U.S.), totally custom-made from scratch window treatments for your particular space; yet they are affordable because you DIY the ordering and installation portions of the project.

I picked white express vinyl shutters that swing to the right. Some of the other details I chose included a full frame, white hinges and hidden push rods. The amount of choices available were impressive, to say the least.

When my shutters arrived, I was relieved at the small amount of work necessary to install them. (I also thought it was cool that they provided me with a little can of paint that matched the shutters.)

Basically, all I had to do was stick the frame together (the hubs is demonstrating in this photo):

Then screw it to the window frame. (The shutters arrived already hinged and pre-drilled.)

The shutters fit right into the frame, secured with hinge pins. I think it took me about a half hour total to install them.

One of the things I love most about these shutters is that I can swing them off to the side when I want to enjoy the view. And I can still easily open the window, too.

The-Shutter-Store-open-windowEvery time I go in my “new” master bathroom, I feel like I’m stepping into a coastal retreat. This space reminds me of when the hubs and I lived in South Carolina many years ago. We have great memories of the time we spent there.

Of course, what makes me smile even bigger is how little I spent creating this look! Here’s the price breakdown:

Paint – $35 from Sherwin Williams
Molding – $28 from 84 Lumber
Rug – $11.99 runner from Target
Shower curtain – $12.99 from Walmart
DIY art – $0
Plantation shutters – Given by The Shutter Store in exchange for an honest review
Accessories – Shopped the house
Total cost = $87.98

What do you think of my low-cost master bathroom makeover? What window treatment would you have chosen from The Shutter Store?

Wanted to share something we did in one of our baths… I have never been crazy about shower/tub inserts, but did not want to go to the expense and mess of ripping one out in the guest bath…..so….to make it look classier we used 4″ tiles the same color as the insert on the wall between the top of the insert and the ceiling…..WOW!! what a difference it made plus it protected the drywall from water splatters, etc…..subway tiles would also work nicely….just wanted to share the idea with you.
What a beautiful transformation you achieved, congrats!!

Fabulous, You are so talented. I love the plantation shutters, this is something I have been thinking about for a couple of years, and I think I will have to go ahead with it now after seeing how easy you made it look. Again you did a beautiful job, colors everything. It looks cool and serene.

  11. Oh how I love shutters! and those look fantastic.

Great makeover – love the stripes!

Love the entire look. Please tell us what the cost of the shutters would have been, had they not been a gift.

I wondered the cost as well on the shutters. I have small bath similar layout. My window is 24″x24″, I priced out at The Shutter Store and prices ranged starting at $106 to $196. I think this is a decent price for shutters. Guessing the shutters for this room were probably at least twice as much as the $88 spent on all other items. Still overall not a bad price for the new look of the room.

Deb you were right on the money! I estimate that the actual cost of my shutters would have been around $150. The Shutter Store is preparing to roll out their Columbus Day sale, so they should have some great discounts coming soon. Thanks so much for your feedback. And I agree that their prices are not bad for a completely custom window treatment.

    • Susan says:

I actually never priced them out with all the specifications I chose, so I apologize that I can’t provide you with an exact price. However, I would estimate it to be in the $150 range after checking briefly on the website for a similar type of shutter. The Shutter Store is preparing to roll out their Columbus Day sale, so keep an eye out for some great discounts coming soon. Thanks for stopping by! Great question.

  13. Wow, what an amazing makeover. Those shutters are perfect. I will have to remember them for when I own my own home one day.

Everything is very seaside-esque. Very pretty, but also masculine. Great job.

Even had you paid for them, I would say it was money well spent. I liked the look without, but they really transform the space into a beachy getaway in a way another treatment wouldn’t have. Really lovely. CTD

  15. Sue Peck says:

Love the makeover! I wish I could use the shutters in my bath, but my window’s too large. How wide are the stripes on the wall?

  16. Carol Hare says:

Love the bathroom colors. How did you do the lower part of the wall? What color is the paint?

  17. Loretta says:

How much do I love the bathroom make over? So much I want to stop total strangers on the street just to share! Amazing! Inspiring! Soothing!

FAN.TAS.TIC!! Love this makeover. It is so fresh and clean. Can’t wait for the next phase.

I REALLY love this bathroom! I want to do it to our main bathroom. Quick question, and it’s going to sound crazy, what color are your fixtures in your bathroom? And is your counter and tub white or off white? I have a hard time envisioning things so when I see stuff I really like I need all the details! Thanks so much!

    • Susan says:

The fixtures (as in hardware) are polished chrome for the most part. The counter and tub are off-white. I’d probably call them “almond.” Thanks for stopping by and best of luck with your project, Melissa. 🙂

      • Melissa garcia says:

How high is your chair rail in this bathroom? And can you post a pic of your sink side with the stripes?
